Florida’s west coast is world famous for its spectacular sunsets, but every 29 days the cosmos outdoes itself and the setting sun is accompanied by the rising of the full moon in the eastern sky. Of course the day's leading up to, and following, a full moon are magnificant also! Here's our recommendations:

Excellent May lunar viewing trips:

A moment in time, both magical and mysterious, there is no better way to experience this breathtaking display than from one of our luxury sailing yachts on the smooth, calm waters of Boca Ciega Bay. Set sail to meet the sun and watch it melt into the Gulf of Mexico; then return home by the light of the silvery moon.

Dolphin Landings is the only charter boat center in the Tampa Bay area offering sunset cruises aboard large ocean ketch sailing vessels. You’ll set sail about an hour before sunset to give you plenty of time to catch the full range of hues painted on Mother Nature's canvas.

We provide plenty of cozy warm blankets ... in case you get a chill, or want to cuddle on deck.

If you love clean air, smooth sailing, postcard perfect sunsets, and moonlit skies … this romantic sailing trip is for you!

Why We See the Full Moon Rise at Sunset
Full moon appears when the Sun and the Moon are on opposite sides of the Earth. As seen from Earth, all of the Moon's surface is visible. The full moon is visible approximately from sunset to sunrise. The Moon appears to be full for several days, since more than 98 percent of the Moon is illuminated a day before and after the full moon. During full moon, the Moon may pass through Earth's shadow causing a lunar eclipse. If the whole moon is in the Earth's shadow a total lunar eclipse occurs. If only a part of the full moon enters the earth's shadow, we see a partial lunar eclipse.
